Biohacking Your Recovery: How Small Changes Can Help Your Body Perform, Recover & Feel Better
What if improving how you feel wasn't about doing more, but about understanding what your body actually needs?
The word biohacking can sound a little intimidating.
It can bring to mind expensive gadgets, complicated supplements and extreme wellness routines. But at BSPOKR, we see biohacking differently.
Biohacking is simply becoming more intentional about how you support your body.
It's about understanding your body's responses to stress, movement, sleep, exercise & recovery and then making small, practical changes that can help you feel and function better.
And the best part?
You don't need a cupboard full of gadgets to start.
Your body is already giving you information every day.
The question is whether you're listening to it.
What does biohacking have to do with massage?
Massage has traditionally been thought of as something we do when our muscles are tight, we're sore after training or we simply need some time out.
And while those benefits remain an important part of remedial massage, recovery is much bigger than muscles alone.
Your body doesn't operate in separate compartments.
Muscles, movement, stress, sleep, breathing and your nervous system all interact.
That's why the same massage won't necessarily be right for you every time you walk through the door.
You might arrive one week needing focused remedial work after a big training session.
The following week, you might have the same tight shoulders, but the underlying reason could be completely different.
- You've had a stressful week.
- You've slept badly.
- You've been sitting at your desk.
- You've been training hard without enough recovery.
- Your body may be asking for something different.
That's where a more personalised approach to recovery comes in.
Your body gives us clues
Before your treatment, we can start looking beyond simply asking:
"How's the body?"
Instead we will be aiming to ask more a direct questions. ( I subtly do this but I need to make it more of a priority for you)
- How well have you been sleeping?
- How stressed have you felt?
- How is your energy?
- Have you been exercising more or less than usual?
- Are you recovering between sessions?
- Where are you holding tension?
- How does your body feel when you wake up?
- Do you feel energised or exhausted?
- Are you feeling physically ready to train?
If you use a wearable such as an Apple Watch, Garmin, Oura or Whoop, you may also have information about things such as sleep, resting heart rate or heart-rate variability (HRV).
These aren't diagnostic tools within a massage treatment, but they can provide useful information about patterns and trends in your recovery.
Combined with what you tell us and what we observe during your treatment, they can help create a more complete picture.
So what could a biohacking-inspired massage actually look like?
At BSPOKR, it could start before you even get on the massage table.
1. Check in with your body
- We'll take a few minutes to establish your current baseline.
- How are you feeling?
- What's changed since your last treatment?
- What have you been doing?
- What does your body need today?
- This gives us a starting point.
2. Choose your recovery strategy
- Not every treatment needs to be intense.
- Sometimes your body needs targeted remedial work.
- Sometimes it needs mobility.
- Sometimes it needs a slower, calming treatment that gives you the opportunity to switch off and recover.
The goal is to match the treatment to what your body needs on that particular day.
3. Regulate before we release
Your nervous system plays an important role in how you experience stress, tension and recovery.
That's why we may incorporate simple breathing and down-regulation techniques into your treatment.
- Nothing complicated.
- Nothing intimidating.
- Just a few minutes to slow things down, bring your attention back to your body and create a better transition from your busy day into your treatment.
4. Your massage is tailored around you
This is where remedial massage remains at the heart of what we do.
We'll work with the areas that need attention, using appropriate techniques based on your presentation and goals.
That could mean focused work on:
- neck and shoulders
- back
- hips
- legs
- sporting-specific areas
- areas affected by repetitive movement
- areas carrying stress and tension
The difference is that we're not treating you from a template.
We're responding to you.
What happens after your massage matters too
One of the biggest mistakes we can make is thinking recovery finishes when we walk out of the treatment room.
It doesn't.
That's why your BSPOKR treatment can also include a simple Recovery Prescription.
Rather than overwhelming you with a list of things you should be doing, we'll identify a few realistic actions that could support your recovery.
For example:
Tonight:
- 5 minutes of slow breathing.
- A gentle walk.
- Reduce screen time before bed.
- Prioritise sleep.
Tomorrow:
- Light movement rather than another high-intensity session.
- Hydrate.
- Take a few movement breaks if you're working at a desk.
The aim isn't to create another list of things you have to achieve.
It's to make recovery easier.
Biohacking doesn't have to be complicated
One of my favourite things about this approach is that some of the most useful strategies are incredibly simple.
You don't necessarily need:
❌ Expensive supplements
❌ Complicated protocols
❌ A room full of technology
❌ An extreme morning routine
❌ Another thing to add to your already busy schedule
Sometimes your best "biohack" might simply be:
- Going to bed earlier.
- Taking a walk.
- Breathing more slowly.
- Taking a rest day.
- Moving your body regularly.
- Getting outside.
- Reducing the amount of stimulation you're exposed to.
- Giving your body enough time to recover from the training you are already doing.
The real skill is identifying which one matters most for you right now.
From massage to recovery optimisation
This is where the BSPOKR philosophy is evolving.
We don't want your massage to be another appointment you tick off your calendar.
We want it to become part of a bigger approach to how you look after yourself.
- Assess.
- Treat.
- Regulate.
- Recover.
- Track.
- Recalibrate.
It's about paying attention to the signals your body is giving you and making small, sustainable adjustments rather than waiting until you're completely exhausted, injured or overwhelmed.
Could biohacking be right for you?
If you're someone who:
- trains regularly
- feels like you're not recovering properly
- carries tension through your neck and shoulders
- spends long hours at a desk
- struggles to switch off
- feels physically tired but mentally switched on
- wants to improve recovery between training sessions
- wants to understand your body's responses better
- simply wants to feel better in your everyday life
...then this approach may be worth exploring.
You don't need to be an elite athlete or a wellness obsessive.
You simply need to be curious about your body.
Your body is the starting point
At BSPOKR, we're interested in what happens when we stop treating the body as a collection of individual problems and start looking at the bigger picture.
Your tight shoulders might not just be about your shoulders.
Your tired legs might not just be about yesterday's workout.
Your inability to switch off might be affecting how you recover.
And sometimes, the answer isn't more.
It's knowing when your body needs less.
Less stimulation.
Less tension.
Less pushing.
More recovery.
More awareness.
More intention.
That's the kind of biohacking we believe in.
Small changes. Smarter recovery. A body that works better for you.
